An analytical review of scientific papers showing the current studies of the formation of lubricating layers and their connection with the state of friction surfaces. Noted that lubricating action in the local contact in rolling and sliding is primarily defined by the presence of hydrodynamic and boundary layers, their thickness and structure. For oils, subjected to aging and contamination, lubricity due to the interaction of molecules of the oxidation products of oils to each other, their interaction with the surface of the friction, surfaces of the particles of solids and wear products. As main parameters determining the effectiveness of the lubricant under the boundary friction, taken to use the value of boundary lubricating layers, the coefficient of friction and bulk oil temperature.

Key word: boundary greasing layer, friction, oil, surface, lubricant action, wear.
